    When I get a notification from Themeforest that the theme got an update, how can I make the update on my own website? Just download the new theme and hit publish? Will that not corrupt the changes that I made during personalization?

    If you are still activating the child-theme to use and do not have any interference with the main-theme, then updating the main-theme will not affect the customizations you have made.
